When is AC replacement worth discussing?
A contractor assessment can compare keeping the present system with replacing it. ENERGY STAR lists frequent repairs, rising energy bills, uneven temperatures and excessive humidity among reasons to discuss a system change. It also says an air conditioner more than ten years old may warrant a replacement discussion, not automatic replacement. Give the provider the equipment age if known and describe what has failed.
What should the assessment include?
Ask how the provider sized the proposed equipment for your actual home and checked ducts and airflow. ENERGY STAR warns that oversizing may cause frequent cycling and that poor airflow can leave indoor air overly damp. This matters when considering Baton Rouge's heat and humidity, but a ZIP code cannot determine the correct system. Ask for the scope and equipment model in writing.
Repair or replacement after a storm?
A storm or outage alone does not establish that the AC needs replacement. Tell the provider what happened and let them examine the equipment safely. Do not handle damaged electrical equipment; if there is an immediate danger, leave and call 911. For a fault in an existing system, start with AC repair, not a presumed replacement.
How do you verify the contractor?
Ask about insurance and applicable license or registration for the proposed work. Check the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors listing yourself before agreeing to work.
