When should a furnace replacement be discussed?

Discuss it after a provider assesses the current furnace and explains repair options. ENERGY STAR lists frequent repairs and older equipment as reasons to consult a contractor about replacement. This does not make every aging furnace unsafe or beyond repair. Tell the provider the known model, age and repair history; do not inspect gas or electrical components yourself.

What should the new-equipment proposal cover?

ENERGY STAR advises a home evaluation and sizing based on the house, insulation and windows. Ask the provider to explain the chosen equipment, any duct assessment, installation scope, system checks and written warranty terms. A Baton Rouge address or ZIP code alone cannot determine the right furnace. If the current unit only needs service, see furnace repair.

What about storms or interrupted heat?

Tell the provider when the heating issue began, including whether it followed a storm or outage, but do not assume the cause. Do not touch suspect equipment or attempt gas work. If someone is in immediate danger, leave and call 911. The website cannot promise an available provider or a response time.

Who verifies the contractor?

Ask for its name, insurance and applicable Louisiana license or registration. Check the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors yourself and agree on work directly with that provider.
