What should you report about a furnace problem?

Describe whether the heating system starts, warms the rooms unevenly or shuts down unexpectedly, and when it changed. State whether you know the type and model, but do not open the unit or handle gas or electrical parts. ENERGY STAR's contractor checklist includes checks of controls and, where applicable, gas connections, combustion and the heat exchanger. These are professional checks, not homeowner instructions.

When should safety take priority?

If there is an immediate danger, leave the area and call 911. Do not try to troubleshoot gas equipment, including after a storm or power interruption. This site cannot assess the safety of a particular furnace or promise rapid help. Our Baton Rouge call line is being set up.

Repair or furnace replacement?

Ask a qualified provider what it found and whether repair is possible before accepting a replacement proposal. ENERGY STAR identifies frequent repairs and an aging furnace as reasons to discuss replacement with a professional, not proof that every older furnace must be replaced. Read furnace replacement for equipment-selection questions.

How do you check the provider?

Ask for insurance and applicable Louisiana license or registration, then use the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors search. Discuss proposed work directly with the independent provider.
