What belongs in a heating repair inquiry?
Identify your home's heating equipment if you can and describe its symptoms, not an assumed diagnosis. This website covers inquiries about furnace cleaning, repair and replacement and air conditioning cleaning, repair and replacement. If you have a furnace, the furnace repair page lists more specific questions. Do not touch gas or electrical equipment to identify a fault.
What should a provider assess?
Ask whether an existing system can be repaired and what examination supports the recommendation. ENERGY STAR says uneven room temperatures can reflect equipment operation, duct problems or inadequate insulation. Its maintenance checklist assigns controls and gas-combustion checks to a contractor. During a Baton Rouge cold spell or after a storm, a symptom still does not identify a failed component.
How is repair different from replacement?
Repair addresses the present equipment; replacement requires a home and equipment evaluation. ENERGY STAR lists frequent repairs and the age of a furnace as reasons to discuss a change. The provider should explain the finding and written scope, rather than treating age alone as a diagnosis. See furnace replacement if the proposal involves new equipment.
What if there is a safety concern?
Keep away from suspect equipment. In an immediate danger, leave and call 911. Ask about insurance and applicable Louisiana licensure or registration before hiring; independently check the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors.
